Symphonic Choir

Elective for 9-12

Fee: None

Symphonic Choir is a selective choir of males and females ranging in size from 50-70 students total [now split into two periods based on grade]. A variety of music is sung,, including scared, secular, folk, and popular. The basic foundations of music are taught to the student. Students who wish to participate in this ensemble will be selected for the class based on one or more of the following criteria: Recommendation [incoming freshman], or parts as needed. If the student is interested in the course and has not sung in choir before, a vocal test may be necessary to determine which part they are best suited to sing. Students enrolled are expected to perform at all concerts and other singing engagements.

Chorale

Chorale is a female chorus open to any female who wishes to participate. A variety of music is sung, including sacred, secular, folk, and popular. The basic foundations of music are taught to the student. Students enrolled are expected to perform at all concerts and singing engagements. All participants will take a vocal audition to evaluate the student's singing range in order to place them on the proper vocal part.

Instrumental Music

Instrumental Music aims to teach the student the intellectual, emotional, and entertaining sides of all music through active performance opportunities. The first nine weeks is dedicated to the Marching Band, the most visible ambassador of the band program. Marching Band is REQUIRED of all students, with the exception of those who are in a fall sport, who needs to discuss his/her situation with the band director after registration. The Marching Band performs at several parades and 3-5 OMEA Marching Contests each fall. The Concert Band is the focus of the rest of the year. The Concert Band gives three concerts annually, and appears at OMEA District Large Group Contest. Students in band also have the opportunity to involved in various other ensembles and activities including Solo and Ensemble Contest. The band is a group known for self-discipline, ,pride, and a passion for music

History of Rock & Roll

Semester Course

This course is a study of the development of rock music from its origins in the Mississippi Delta to the music of today. Different groups, eras, cultures, and music will be analyzed. This course is only open to 11th and 12th grade students.

Music Keyboard

An introduction to the techniques of a piano keyboard. Basic fundamentals, etudes, and full piano arrangements will be explores. A keyboard is provided in a keyboard lab.

Basic Musicianship

Basic Musicianship is designed to provide the student with a thorough understanding of the building blocks of music. By the end of the course, students will learn/review the basics of reading and writing music, melody, and harmony, how to play and read melodies on the piano, learn to read a lead sheet, and learn about some of the major milestones in music form the 1700's to the present. The course is designed for all students. Band and Choir members will find their skills increasing by reinforcing these basic concepts. Students not in an ensemble, but who want to learn about music will find they will leave this class with the skills needed to further learn an instrument, improve their singing skills, and knowing enough to join a band or participate in church music. Students should be outgoing and ready to try anything! As with most courses, this class may only be taken one time in a student's high school career.
