Personal Development

This course is intended to provide students with knowledge and skills which will aid them in managing work and family responsibilities for the well-being of self and others. This course is a year-long course separated into two parts. During one semester the emphasis will be on making clothing decisions, basic sewing skills, creating a living environment, balancing work and family responsibilities, and self-esteem. The other semester will be spent exploring food choices, food preparation skills, parenting responsibilities and improving family relations.

Creative Cooking

This class is designed to provide students with advanced and creative cooking skills. Students will become familiar with, and be able to prepare, meals using a variety of different small appliances. The class will help students understand the correlation between good nutrition and good health. Topics to be discussed include appliance cookery, dietary goals and guidelines, etiquette, and eating disorders.

Life Planning

This course is designed to help students manage their lives and career goals. They will learn skills to help them become independent adults and responsible citizens in the future. Some topics covered include: real world success, writing thank you notes, map reading, budgeting, and independent living.

Parenting

This course is intended to provide students with knowledge of the process of pregnancy and birth, to understand growth and development of children, and to help students become responsible parents in the future. Some topics that will be covered include: heredity and environment, characteristics and needs of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school aged children. Identifying and preventing child abuse will also be discussed.

Family Relations

This course is intended to help students develop skills for facilitating positive interpersonal relationships within a family. Some topics to be discussed include: personality development, sex and sexuality, love and partner selection, blended families and problem solving. It will also deal with divorce, aging, illness, death, suicide, and family violence.

Home Awareness I

This course is designed for students who are looking for inexpensive ways to decorate their homes with crafts. Some projects for the course will include plastic needlepoint, crosstitch, and quilt wall hangings. Other crafts will be explored.

Home Awareness II

Home Awareness II is a continuation of Home Awareness I and allows students to complete more projects or projects that are more difficult than what is possible in Home Awareness I.
